Railway” — a 1.8 billion euro line connecting Durrës to Pristina. The announcement, made by Albanian Railways Director Ergys Verdho, positions the project as a key component in regional economic integration and tourism growth.

In a televised interview, Verdho revealed that the railway will not only link Albania and Kosovo, but also activate economic zones, revive neglected rural villages, and plug the region into Mediterranean shipping hubs via Porto Romano — now dubbed “the fifth port of the Mediterranean.”

The timeline? A full 10-year rollout:

  • 1 year for feasibility and design

  • 1 year for procurement

  • 7 years of construction

  • 1 final year for testing and certification

Critics have raised concerns over the ambitious timeline and Albania’s history of project delays, but authorities remain firm: this is not just a national venture — it’s a corridor to Europe.

“This line merges with both Corridor 8 and 9, transforming from a national route into a trans-European artery,” said Verdho.

Despite funding gaps and political hurdles, the Albanian government is pushing forward — placing this megaproject front and center as part of its EU-integration narrative.
